As a writer trying out some timing of the jokes, the use of the "pregnant pause" can sometimes be used ineffectively. The punchline wasn't as good here, but I do like the gradual silent movements to Emily that Max does. It shows a bit of history between them, as much later we find out that they actually had some "history."
